FAQ Header

What is the solubility profile of this ylang ylang oil — which carriers, solvents and bases does it dissolve in?

Ylang ylang oil is a typical sesquiterpene-rich floral oil: fully miscible with ethanol and carrier oils, and essentially insoluble in water. This guides its use in perfumery, cosmetics and aqueous home-care products.

Solubility Profile

Solvent / baseSolubility
EthanolFully miscible (1:1 and higher in 90% ethanol, most grades)
Carrier oils (jojoba, sweet almond, coconut, MCT)Fully miscible
Vegetable / fixed oilsFully miscible
WaterInsoluble
Glycerin / propylene glycolPoorly soluble; requires solubilizer for aqueous systems
Surfactant systems (polysorbate 20/80, PEG)Emulsifiable for washes, body care, bath products
  • In fine perfumery, dilute in ethanol (extrait/EDP/EDT) at 0.5-10% of the perfume oil
  • In cosmetics, blend into a carrier oil or cream base at the recommended dilution (see usage-rate FAQ)
  • For water-based products (body washes, bath gels, sprays), pre-dissolve with a solubilizer or emulsifier
  • In candles and wax melts, the oil disperses directly into hot wax
  • Ethanol solubility is checked on the COA as an identity parameter
