How soluble is this valerian root oil in different solvents?

Valerian root oil is soluble in ethanol and fixed oils, and insoluble in water — a classic root-oil profile confirmed by the miscibility requirement of T/CAFFCI 70-2023.

Solubility Profile

SolventSolubilityNote
Ethanol (85%)SolubleT/CAFFCI 70-2023: 1 vol oil in 2 vol 85% ethanol gives a clear solution
Ethanol (95–100%)Fully misciblePerfume & TCM tincture preparation
Fixed oils (jojoba, fractionated coconut, sweet almond)SolubleAromatherapy & massage blends
Glycols / polysorbateSoluble (with warm-up)Water-dispersible systems require solubilizer
WaterInsolubleSinks as a heavy oil phase (denser than water)
  • For aqueous rinse-off products (pillow sprays, foot baths, bath oils), use a solubilizer (e.g., polysorbate 20/80) or emulsify
  • Pre-dissolve in ethanol or carrier oil before compounding; gentle warming (30–40°C) improves handling
  • The oil is heavier than water — in a water phase it settles at the bottom rather than floating
  • A solubility statement is included on the batch COA for traceability
