Why is orris absolute so expensive, and what drives its price?

Orris is famous as one of the most expensive perfume raw materials in the world. Four structural factors drive its price:

  1. Yield — producing 1 kg of orris absolute consumes several tons of fresh iris rhizomes (yield only 0.1–0.5%)
  2. Time — the rhizomes must be aged 3+ years for irone to form, locking capital for years
  3. Market structure — global irone supply is dominated by one major house (IFF), limiting competition
  4. Irone content — higher irone grades (molecular-distilled, up to 60%) command premiums; reference price of orris irone is in the range of ¥15,000/kg

Price Drivers

FactorImpact
Irone contentHigher content = higher price per gram
Aging durationLonger aging = more aroma value
Origin & cropFlorence-origin and good crops command premium
Market structureConcentrated supply keeps price high
  • 2 tons of dried rhizomes yield roughly 1 kg of irone-rich oil, illustrating the extreme raw-material intensity
  • Price moves with crop season, so forward contracts protect against market swings

For a stable cost line, we recommend reserving a forward contract at the harvest-season price.
