How does this lemongrass oil compare with lemon oil, citronella oil and litsea cubeba oil?

Lemongrass oil is often compared with three neighbours. Lemon oil (cold-pressed) is sweeter, softer and phototoxic, while lemongrass is sharper and non-phototoxic. Citronella oil is the famous confusion case: it is built on citronellal, smells rosy-herbaceous, and is used for repellency, not flavouring. Litsea cubeba oil is the closest chemical cousin — even higher in citral — but it is a woody-tree fruit, not a grass.

Quick Comparison

OilMain compoundAromaPhototoxicMain use
Lemongrass oilCitral ≥65-75%Sharp fresh lemon-grass, earthy tailNoFlavouring, perfume, soap, repellent
Lemon oil (cold-pressed)Limonene ~65-70%Sweeter, juicier lemonYesFlavouring, aromatherapy
Citronella oilCitronellal 3-45%Rosy-herbaceousNoRepellent, soap (not flavouring)
Litsea cubeba oilCitral 70-80%Sharper, more metallic lemonNoFlavouring, citral feedstock
  • If you need a natural citral boost in a flavouring, lemongrass and litsea cubeba are interchangeable in many formulas; litsea is usually cheaper per citral unit
  • If you need a lemon character without phototoxicity, lemongrass is the safer choice than cold-pressed lemon
  • Never substitute citronella for lemongrass in food — citronella is not listed for the same food uses (FEMA 2308 vs 2624)
