How soluble is this eucalyptus leaf oil — solubility profile?

Eucalyptus leaf oil is a hydrophobic, volatile oil. Solubility behaviour matters for formulation: it tells you whether the oil will stay clear in alcohol-based products, how to emulsify it into water-based systems, and why simple water dilution is not the right approach.

Solubility Profile

Solvent / SystemBehaviour
WaterInsoluble — separates and floats; shaking forms only a temporary dispersion
70% ethanol1 vol + 5 vol 70% ethanol gives a clear solution (standard miscibility test)
95-96% ethanolMiscible in all proportions, clear
Fixed oils (almond, jojoba, etc.)Soluble and miscible — the usual carrier for massage blends
Glycerin / propylene glycolPartially soluble; glycols can be used with care in diluted systems
Surfactant systemsEmulsifies with a suitable emulsifier for sprays, gels, and washes
  • For aromatic sprays and perfumes, pre-dissolve the oil in ethanol before adding water
  • For massage and muscle-relief oils, simply blend with a fixed vegetable oil — no surfactant needed
  • In household cleaners, use a solubilizer (e.g., PEG castor oil derivatives) at 2-4x the oil weight
  • A clear 70% ethanol solution (1:5) is part of the routine QC check on every batch
  • Never add pure oil directly to water and expect a uniform product — it will not dissolve
