FAQ Header

What is the solubility profile of this cinnamon bark oil?

Cinnamon bark oil is a non-polar essential oil: it dissolves readily in ethanol and fixed oils, blends with most fragrance materials, and is essentially insoluble in water and glycerin. This behavior is standard for steam-distilled spice oils and is important for formulation and cleaning up.

Solubility Profile

Solvent / systemSolubilityNote
70% ethanol1 vol in 3 vol, clear solutionStandard miscibility test per GB/T 11425-2008
95% / anhydrous ethanolFreely solubleUsed for perfumery dilutions and tinctures
Fixed oils (jojoba, almond, MCT)Freely solubleFor carrier blends and massage oils
Vegetable waxes / candle waxSoluble in fragrance phaseFor scented candles; melt-phase addition
WaterInsolubleRequires solubilizer (e.g. polysorbate) for aqueous use
GlycerinInsolubleNot suitable as carrier
  • In aqueous applications (room sprays, bath products), use a solubilizer such as Polysorbate 20/80 (typically 2-4 parts per part of oil) with gentle heating
  • In candles, add the oil to melted wax at 60-65°C and stir thoroughly; cinnamaldehyde-rich oils can accelerate wax discoloration, so use a stabilizer and test your specific wax
  • Because the oil is denser than water, water separation during distillation is straightforward with an insulated oil-water separator at 68-75°C
