How is bergamot oil used in perfumery?

Bergamot is the undisputed 'king' of perfume top notes — the soul of Eau de Cologne and a brilliant opening for floral, oriental, chypre and fougère accords.

  • Classic proportions: Eau de Cologne tradition ~ 20-30% citrus blend (bergamot dominant); modern eau de parfum 5-15%
  • Blends beautifully with lavender, neroli, rosemary and petitgrain (the 'classic cologne family') as well as rose, jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla
  • Because cold-pressed bergamot is phototoxic, perfumers switch to FCF grade in high-concentration fine fragrance and always respect the 0.4% IFRA limit for leave-on products
  • Bergamot fixes the top note: its esters slow evaporation of lighter citrus, giving 'lift plus longevity'
  • Versatility tip: 1-3% of a composition as bergamot adds shine to almost any perfume style without dominating
